This Year’s Gustave Blache III Scholarships Recipients
To help foster Louisiana’s young artists, the LEH and the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City have partnered to offer the Gustave Blache III Art Scholarships for Aspiring Artists. Named after accomplished Louisiana artist and SVA alumnus Gustave Blache III, the scholarship is open to aspiring artists from Louisiana interested in pursuing either Bachelor or Master of Fine Arts degrees in illustration at SVA, one of the nation’s premiere art schools. The scholarships offer one graduating high-school senior support for a four-year undergraduate program and one college senior support for a two-year graduate program, contingent upon applicants’ acceptance into the SVA.
This year’s undergraduate scholarship winner is Cierra Johnson of New Orleans. The Lusher student’s work is motivated by astrology, feminism, and Black empowerment. She has artistically explored African American history, spirituality, and her personal journey overcoming trauma. She particularly hopes that the personal truth she speaks in her works inspires others to do the same.
This year’s graduate scholarship winner is Myron Solomon, also of New Orleans. A Dillard University student, Solomon notes the importance of catharsis in his work, as well as the irony that emerges from the reframing of subjects in new contexts. His use of unconventional surfaces and rough brushwork creates an atmosphere of nostalgia. Solomon plans to use his artistic development to teach and to pursue future work in museum curation.
