Summer Louisiana Cultural Vistas Dives into Louisiana Sports

lcvsummer16coversmThe summer 2016 issue of Louisiana Cultural Vistas is dedicated to the 2016 Museum on Main Street touring exhibition “Hometown Teams,” a project of the Smithsonian Institute and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, in partnership with the Louisiana State Museum and Louisiana Main Street. At museums and libraries in six Louisiana communities, citizens will come together to reconsider the role of sports in U.S. society and to share their own stories of underdog heroics, larger-than-life-legends, fierce rivalries and gut wrenching defeats.

Feature essays include Lacar Musgrove’s history of the Audubon Racing Track; a return to the original Evangeline Downs, written by Alan Broussard and Conni Castille; the story of the 1975 Northwestern State Lady Demons, Louisiana’s first team to benefit from Title IX legislation; and Dr. Ibrahima Seck’s exploration of the central themes in Wynton Marsalis’ 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz oratoria Blood on the Fields, the second installment in the LEH’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize Centennial Campfire Initiative. Our cover comes from photographer L. Kasimu Harris. We also have new columns from Richard Campanella, Gwendolyn Knapp, Christopher Cenac, Justin Nystrom, and Ben Sandmel, and partner sections from The Historic New Orleans Collection, Louisiana State Museum, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
