Preliminary Application Policy for Outreach Grants, Public Humanities Grants, Documentary Film & Radio Grants and Teacher Institutes for Advanced Study Grants

Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a Preliminary Application to the LEH staff at least 4-6 weeks prior to the appropriate grant deadline. Responses to late arriving drafts cannot be guaranteed. This draft is circulated among the staff who probe the proposal for weaknesses and strengths. These attributes are then communicated to the project director in writing so that you may revise the application before the deadline. This written response is followed by telephone consultations as needed and, where necessary and feasible, a personal meeting. Often, projects are rejected or receive reduced funding because of preventable errors or guideline violations.

Preliminaries must include the narrative, budget and budget narrative. Information on what to include in the narrative and budget may be found in the Money Matters section of the Grant Guidelines, and the guidelines for each grant category/type. Preliminary proposals should be developed using the Preliminary Application Worksheet found on the Web site of the appropriate grant program. Partial preliminary applications will NOT be reviewed.

Mandatory Preliminary Applications
Outreach Grants: Applicants who submit preliminary applications at least 4 weeks before the deadline are eligible for up to $2,500 in funding; applicants who do not submit a preliminary proposal are limited to $2,000 in funds.

Public Humanities Grants and Documentary Film and Radio Grants: Applicants who do NOT submit preliminary applications at least 4 weeks before the deadline are limited to a maximum grant request of $10,000.

Teacher Institutes for Advanced Study Grants: Applicants who do NOT submit a full narrative and budget for review by September 1 are limited to a maximum grant request of $30,000.
