On Thursday, July 23, Louisiana Cultural Vistas magazine will host Monumental Decisions: Confederate Memorials in the 21st Century” at the Louisiana Humanities Center, 938 Lafayette St. in the Central Business District. Doors open at 5:45pm and the event is free and open to the public.

Please note: Capacity for the event is limited to 130, admitted on a first come, first enter basis. LCV appreciates the public interest in this discussion and will publish a transcript and audio recording at www.louisianaculturalvistas.org to continue this public conversation. Also, please note that parking is not available in the LHC lot on July 23.

In light of Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s recent call to remove four statues in New Orleans, the panel offers insights on the history and debated fate of the statues of General Robert E. Lee, General P.G.T. Beauregard and CSA President Jefferson Davis, along with the obelisk marking the location of the 1874 Battle of Liberty Place.

The panel will include Laura Rosanne Adderley, associate professor of history at Tulane University; Molly Mitchell, professor of early American history at the University of New Orleans; Justin Nystrom, assistant professor and co-director of Loyola University’s Documentary and Oral History Studio; and Greg Osborn, associate at the New Orleans Public Library. LCV Editor David Johnson will serve as the moderator.

The LHC is located at 938 Lafayette Street in New Orleans. For more information, call 504.523.4352.
