| Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation Awards Funds to Support PRIME TIME |
|
In response to a funding proposal, the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation has offered support for PRIME TIME programming in Louisiana. The Brown Foundation was established in 1959 and is involved in funding medical research; housing for the homeless; organizations who care for the sick, hungry or helpless; religious and educational institutions; and organizations and groups concerned with improving our local community. In December, the foundation made an award to PRIME TIME in the amount of $5,000. These funds will supplement overall expenses for two PRIME TIME programs in metropolitan New Orleans during the Spring 2010 term. "The generous support of the Brown Foundation will assist PRIME TIME in meeting the literacy needs of our community," said Miranda Restovic, PRIME TIME Co-Director. "We look forward to serving our community together in the coming months."
The LEH and the PRIME TIME staff wish to thank the Brown Foundation and its Board of Directors for their consideration and generosity. |
| Partner Spotlight: Kentucky Humanities Council |
The Kentucky Humanities Council (KHC) is maintaining its dedication to PRIME TIME in a big way. With plans to fund the implementation of 18 programs within the state during 2010, KHC is working diligently to meet the demand for PRIME TIME programming throughout Kentucky. "We truly value the PRIME TIME Family Reading Time program and the partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities" said KHC Associate Director, Kathleen Pool.
In 2004 the LEH awarded Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) one of several NEH National Expansion Grants. KDLA and KHC partnered to implement 5 PRIME TIME programs which form the basis for this long-standing partnership. An active PRIME TIME affiliate state since receiving the initial award, KHC has successfully completed 85 PRIME TIME programs, enrolling over 3,000 participants in the PRIME TIME program.
An avid supporter of bilingual PRIME TIME, KHC hosts increasingly diverse audiences at its PRIME TIME sites. One of KHC's 2009 programs included participants who spoke 6 different languages. The KHC staff along with trained team members accommodated participants in each language group by recruiting translators to help facilitate storytelling and discussion. Based on the outcomes of that extremely successful program, KHC plans to implement a summer 2010 program for refugees of various nationalities being serviced at Kentucky family resource centers.
KHC continues to expand its PRIME TIME infrastructure which includes a large cadre of trained program coordinators, scholars, and storytellers. In March, the KHC staff will host its 6th self-funded and self-planned training workshop in Pleasant Hill, Kentucky.
The LEH and PRIME TIME greatly appreciate the Kentucky Humanities Council as well as its supporters and partners for their commitment to literacy and the humanities on behalf of Kentucky's families. In recognition of their work, Dr. Virginia Carter and Kathleen Pool of KHC will be presented with an LEH award for Public Humanities Programming during the LEH's 2010 award ceremony.
CORRECTION:
The previous version of this entry contained inaccurate information. The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) was the actual recipient of the 2004 LEH/NEH award, and remains a valued partner of the Kentucky Humanities Council.
We regret the error, and apologize to the agencies concerned. |

PRIME TIME and Target Literacy Continues in Spring 2010 |
The "Target Literacy" project is expanding to Arthur Ashe Charter School in New Orleans, LA. The generous support of the Target Corporation and the spectacular leadership of the United Way's New Orleans Kids Partnership (NOKP), along with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities' PRIME TIME program, will make it possible for parents and children to participate in an innovative literacy project that combines the efforts and resources of multiple community organizations, among them are the Louisiana Children's Museum and New Orleans Outreach.
The Target Corporation funds will be used to support a six-week PRIME TIME FAMILY READING TIME program. The program will be hosted by the Louisiana Children's' Museum for families of Arthur Ashe Charter School. New Orleans Outreach staff will assist in recruitment and logistics. The program will run Tuesdays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. from February 23 through March 30, 2010. Dr. Bobbie Stevenson will facilitate the discussion portion of the program, while Rachel Norman will serve as storyteller.

| STAIR Says, "Hola to PRIME TIME Family Reading Time! |
Sara Woodard, executive director of Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR) a local non-profit organization that uses trained volunteers to teach reading to at-risk public elementary school children recently coordinated her second PRIME TIME program. As the number of ELL students enrolling in STAIR rapidly increased, Sara chose to partner with a New Orleans charter school that aims to serve the city's growing Hispanic population. Accordingly, she chose one of PRIME TIME's bilingual (English/Spanish) series for this site. Although initially apprehensive about how the program would accommodate differences in language, Ms. Woodard was pleasantly surprised to find that all participants were fully engaged and actively participating each week.

| PRIME TIME Goes Digital with Foundant Technologies |
|
A recently established relationship with Foundant Technologies, a Montana-based grants management software company, has made applying for a PRIME TIME grant more convenient. PRIME TIME has already begun to employ the company's Grant Lifecycle Manager (GLM) which "makes it easy to receive and evaluate online applications, record decisions, and measure outcomes."
The Foundant software is very user-friendly, and will make submitting PRIME TIME grant applications as well as other data collection forms easier and faster for applicants. Interested agencies should note that some paper forms are being phased out, and applications for Fall 2010 and beyond will be collected using Foundant's GLM. Currently, only grant applicants (the individual completing and submitting the PRIME TIME grant application) and program coordinators will use the online system. Scholars, storytellers, community organizers, and preschool coordinators will continue to work with the relevant paper forms until further notice.
The PRIME TIME staff will be available to support software users during the transition. Additionally, demonstrations will be conducted during upcoming Training Workshops. Visit the PRIME TIME webpage for a link to the LEH's Foundant website, and contact Shantrell Adams for help with and/or details on the Foundant software. |
