What is a PRIME TIME Affiliate?
PRIME TIME Affiliates are independently funded sites located outside Louisiana. Affiliates can be statewide institutions (humanities councils/departments of education), regional agencies (literacy councils/library systems) or individual libraries, schools, community-based centers, etc. that are self-supported, administered, and implemented. Although the PRIME TIME staff is available to provide assistance, affiliate sites are responsible for securing the funding necessary to implement the program. Affiliates are recruited by PRIME TIME staff or signal their interest in the program by contacting a staff person. Since these sites are self-funded, neither a funding proposal nor an application is required by LEH. Call (504) 620-2486 for more information.
Program Description
Once a week for six weeks or eight weeks, you will open your doors to 25 families—low income, low-literacy, 6-10 year-old children and their parents/guardians who are at-risk due to low reading abilities. During each 90 minute session, the families will share a meal or snack, engage in rigorous, thought-provoking humanities-based storytelling and discussion lead by a storyteller and a university scholar using children’s literature, and learn about the resources available to them at the site and the public library.
Eligibility
Eligibility may vary from state to state. However, the PRIME TIME staff will assist eligible agencies interested in launching the program at a single site or statewide, as well as provide on-going technical support.
Requirements
Affiliate partners should prepare for the following:
- Solicit funds/grants to cover all costs associated with the program
- Submit necessary agreement, data collection and reporting forms as well as curriculum usage fees.
- Statewide and regional agencies should recruit library(ies), school(s), or other direct service agency(ies) to host PRIME TIME program(s)
- Recruit qualified scholar(s), storyteller(s), and other professionals to fill site-specific program roles
- Ensure that the individuals chosen to fill program roles are willing/able to attend a two-day training workshop in New Orleans (the sponsoring agency must cover travel and hotel costs)
Affiliation Process
Interested agencies should call (504) 620-2486 for details on the program and information regarding ongoing PRIME TIME activity and/or program history within their state. The staff will connect you with a State Project Director if there is existing PRIME TIME programming within your state and you are deemed an appropriate partner for that agency. If partnering with an existing agency within your state is not possible, the staff can assist you in a funding search to get PRIME TIME started in your community, or developing a budget if funding is available. Once funding is secured, the staff will assist you in completing the appropriate paperwork and ensure that the individuals chosen to fill program roles are properly trained before program implementation.
